Your Local Legends

The Greenwood Hotel is a historic drinking and dining institution that is located in the heart of North Sydney on Greenwood Plaza’s rooftop gardens. Originally built in 1878 as a public school, it became The Greenwood Hotel in 1992 and has been a popular social destination ever since.

One of the many things that make the Greenwood Hotel an icon in Sydney is the amazing staff.
Meet Izzy, the sales Coordinator at Greenwood Hotel and another one of our local legends!

Here’s a little more about Izzy ...

Q) What do you love the most about your job and business?
The thing I love the most about my job is being able to work closely with my clients from start to finish. Greenwood is such a versatile venue, and being able to see all different kinds of events come to life is an amazing experience. Seeing my clients enjoying themselves is truly so rewarding and makes all the long hours very worth it!

Q) How do you stay connected with your loved ones during lockdown?
I have taken advantage of zoom! Whether it be virtual cocktail making with my girlfriends or family calls on birthdays, it’s been a great tool to remain connected with all my friends and family whilst being locked down.

Q) If you could invite any 3 people to dinner who would they be?
If I could invite any 3 people to dinner it would have to be Michelle Obama, Anna Wintour and Oprah Winfrey. These are women I have always followed and been inspired by as I have grown up.

Q) What is the first thing you will do when lockdown ends?
The first thing I will do when lockdown ends is a big summer beach day. My favourite days are spent at the beach followed by an Aperol at the pub!

Q) What TV shows, movies, podcasts or books have you watched/listened to/read during lockdown?
This lockdown I have re-watched my favourite Netflix series Suits.

Q) Which song gets you on the dance floor?
Work – Kelly Rowland.

Q) How can customers support your business?
We can’t wait to reopen our doors post-lockdown! Our first big event is Melbourne Cup, and I think this is the perfect opportunity to dive back into life at the Greenwood and celebrate life after lockdown. Alternatively, whether it be for a mid-week lunch with colleagues or after-work drinks, any time you walk through our doors, you’re supporting our venue, and we’re so excited to see each and every one of you.

Q) If you had a superpower, what would it be?
My super power would be teleporting.

Q) What is the go-to thing you order for the table?
My favourite thing to order for the table would have to be a grazing board – there’s always something to suit everyone! I must admit, it’s incredibly difficult to work in a venue with such a good burrata board. I have to try really hard NOT to get it every day for lunch!

Q) If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
It would have to be Japanese food. I could eat Sushi and Sashimi for the rest of my life.

Q) If you weren’t doing this job, what would your dream job be… it can be anything!
If I could do any job it would have to be a professional traveler. Getting paid to travel the world and review restaurants, hotels and airplanes seems like the dream.

Q) What would be your last meal?
My last meal would have to be a classic chicken schnitzel washed down with an Aperol Spritz. If you’ve had a Greenwood chicken schnitzel, you’ll know what I mean!

Q) What is your favourite cocktail?
Has to be an Aperol Spritz. Aperol Spritzes are quintessentially summer. Paired with a sunny day in one of our outdoor courtyards, you can’t go wrong.

Q) Is there something about your store / product that may be a surprise?
A lot of people assume Greenwood Hotel was church, but it was in fact a school! In 1884, Nimrod Greenwood was appointed as headmaster of the school, and due to his ongoing popularity, the school been affectionately known as ‘Greenwood’s School’ – hence our name! We often have past students stop by and relive their school day memories, which is so heart-warming to see.

Q) What is the weirdest thing you've eaten?
The weirdest thing that I have eaten is a scorpion. I was at a Thai street market, and my brother dared me to try one…scary at first but didn’t taste too bad!

Q) Where is your favourite spot in North Sydney?
My favourite spot in North Sydney would be sitting in our Southern Courtyard at Greenwood. In the afternoons you get gorgeous sunshine, and in the evenings it’s so pretty to sit under the fairy lights. It’s truly the perfect spot for a drink after work!
